HMYC Dinghy Regatta Dec 2010

HMYC Club Champs and Monthly Mug #2

(Report based on info received from Tim Duguid)
Well, things are looking up and interesting!!!
Race #2 of the HMYC Club Champs Series and the second Monthly Mug of the sailing season.
Wind and ten boats on the start line for the first race on Sunday. We had the usual three back-to-back races with Race Officers Mark Patrick and Andy Arbuckle doing the honours. The latest practice of racing to the larger outer cans as windward marks appears to be proving to be most effective, with great long beats and runs.
The first race used the No 1 (Quantum Sails) can. Hunter Odin's Eye, with the young Marisca Lagrange under the experienced tutelage of Tony Cockerill, was quick at the start after which a great tussle developed with Hybrid Theory (sporting the new Pentax sails). The two kept pretty close for the majority of the race but with the wind building, the heavier and more experienced pairing ( Rob Samways/JL Swart) on Hybrid took it at the finish.Rob Tarbie also showed well on his Extra dinghy (Come on dinghy sailors, this old salt needs some competition!!).
The second race saw the wind build quite a bit with some white horses showing on the water. A heavier wind at the start of the season always appears to reveal rig issues and this race was no exception. Odin went to the use of his new blade sail with his light crew aboard. Essex (Paul Changuion/Tim Duguid) broke the leech on their jib so missed the start while sails were changed. At the head of the fleet it was Hybrid and Odin with the former gaining the advantage with heavier crew and larger sail in the stronger wind. A rare show by Nigel Miln on his Hunter Baby Blue (ex Craig Millar), with Anton Ellens as crew, moved up to challenge Hybrid to the line with the finish going in favour of Hybrid by a mere 3 seconds !!!
The final race of the day saw the wind move further to the east and No 2 (Seaport Supply) was to be the windward mark. Essex Girl, with an older jib, suddenly found her legs again and went on to lead the race to the finish. Behind her, the tussle between Hybrid and Baby Blue was rejoined with Hybrid prevailing once again! Always in the mix was Paradigm Shift with Rob Macintosh and Mark Hulzer aboard, sailing well within themselves and hurling abuse whenever the opportunity arose!
Hunter Class Silver Fleet action took the form of participation by Keith Gerson and Roger Eshmade on Witblitz, Rob Bell and crew Derek Wilkes, and Louis Lagrange and Stephen Wagner on Hirondelle. Really good to see the club's elder gentlemen back on the water. Louis made his return to the water with the experienced Stephen Wagner as crew, got the bag flying in the stronger breeze and is at the head of the Silver Fleet standings.
Hunter Class George Duffin Series results for the day went the way of Rob Samways, with the Miln/Ellens pairing looking to develop into an interesting combination. After two GD events it is Odin on top with Essex close behind followed by a closely-bunched group of boats at this early stage of the GD and Hunter Trophy series.
The Monthly Mug for October went the way of the L26 Desiree with rent-a-skipper Alister Bennet from New Zealand handicapped by the presence of HMYC Bosuns, Georg Muller and Clive Waddy, aboard !!!! Well done.
A big thank you to Mark and Andy for doing the honours on Bridge for the day. A job well done.

Next up is event #2 of the Partington Plate long distance series on Sat 16 October. Event #1 was a great start to the Partington Plate Series of the '10/'11 season so be sure to bring out all the cruisers again!! The growing number of larger keelers in the fleet presents a great opportunity to get folk introduced to the joys of sailing, especially as crew.

Upcoming HMYC Calendar Events:
Saturday 16 October Partington Plate #2
Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 October Rose Bowl Mini Regatta
Sunday 31 October Youth Fun Day
Sunday 7 November Class Champs/Monthly Mug #3
