Introductory sailing course with Sail Africa

 Hello,

Please be reminded about our introductory sailing course that will be held on Sunday 6th and Sunday 13th February from 9-4pm.

At this level, students learn the basic theory and terms of boats and sailing, as well as becoming familar with sailing single and double-handed dinghies.

The Stage 1 is designed to introduce children to sailing. All participants will learn the basic skills for boat preparation, rope work and simple manouvres while afloat. By the end of this course, children will be have a basic understanding of how a boat sails, and some experience of steering and handling a boat.

Please ensure your child has a packed lunch and refreshments for the break.
Please also ensure they bring footwear that can be worn at all times as well as a change of clothes.

After this stage, the sailors move up to stages 2 and then 3.  Once they have completed a 2 level they can take part in our Supervised Sailing Sessions where they can sail independently in the bay, and once they have completed stage 3 they can start entering races (please see the attached flow diagram).

9 HR Appeal - NOR is going up on website today

Hi everyone

Well, we are off to a good start this year.  The Hunter Provincials were successful and Club members acquitted themselves very well.  The SAS KZN Christmas Regatta was a resounding success and SAS KZN have confirmed that they would like this to become an annual event, which is a feather in our cap!

Our next major event is the Quantum HMYC 9-Hour Endurance Race which is to take place on Saturday 26 February.  We are very pleased to inform you that Quantum Sails have once again offered to be our leading sponsor, and we are very grateful to Craig and Taryn Millar for their continued support.

We are appealing to anyone who is not sailing to step forward to assist in the many duties that take place on and before the day.  Just to name a few:

·         Setting up of the club on the Friday, demarcation of parking areas etc.
·         Registration on Friday evening and Saturday morning – minimum of 5 people required
·         Recording in 2-hourly stints in the recording tent – minimum of 15 people required
·         Co-ordinating of the camping, collecting money, reconciliation thereof – preferably two people to work together
·         Directing traffic and parking
·         Moving of members boats out of the sailing channel, and back on to their moorings on the Sunday
·         Selling T-shirts
·         Managing skipper change over forms

Please could you contact Jean Wagner on wagtails@mweb.co.za if you can assist with any of the above.
We also need a lot of PRIZES.  The success of an event is often measured by the prize giving.  Please could you consider donating prizes to the event.
A copy of the NOR is attached.  Please could you let me know if you have any queries.

Thanks
Dave Wagner

PARTINGTON PLATE #4 - Saturday 15 February 2011
The first of the Partington Plate series events sailed in the new year drew a small fleet of seven participants, including the usual Hunter contingent accompanied by a few of the larger keelers ( the L26 of George Muller, the Theta of the Patrick family, Pete Goble on the L20 and Rob Attwell and Co on the graceful 'Cheers'). The weather played the game and all at the dam enjoyed a very pleasant Midlands summer's day with a six to eight knot wind coming over the dam wall.It was most encouraging to see the number of people making use of the HMYC facilities over the weekend.
Race Officer Rob McIntosh indicated an interesting variation of course during the briefing. A Jetty start followed by a beat up to No 1 (Quantum Sails), a tight reach to No 2, then a beam reach around the Thurlow point followed by a tight reach all the way to No 8 at the 'faaaaaar' end of Thurlow Bay, a long reach across to No 6 (Build It), a beat up to No 1 and a run to the finish at the Jetty. The action out on the water took up to around two hours for the boats of the fleet, with the front runners having to work hard on the reaches to keep reluctant spinnakers working hard.
It was the three Hunters of Tony Cockerill, Pete Metcalfe and Nigel Milne jockeying for position from the start with the L26 of Georg Muller in the mix around No 1. By No 2 it was 'Odin' and 'Flirt' with the L26 having had a spot of bother with spinnaker and/or direction. On the reach to Thurlow point, it was 'Flirt' which appeared to have better boat speed under spinnaker and this put her ahead of 'Odin' all the way to No 6. 'Baby Blue' made up a vast amount of water to put pressure on the two leading Hunters at No 6. 'Flirt' rounded No 6 and beat to the centre of the dam while 'Odin' favoured the shore, despite having to sail through the moorings. The latter option appeared to bear the greater reward with 'Odin' rounding No 1 ahead of a chasing 'Flirt' and 'Baby Blue'. Positions remained as such to the finish just behind an RO scrambling to take up position on the jetty!
Thanks to all who turned out to participate and to RO Rob.

Caruthers Cup 8th January 2011

A beautiful day with the usual wind over the dam wall. It was good to see the activity at the club with families out enjoying boating in various forms.Unfortunately only four boats “braved” the pleasant conditions with a five knot wind gusting to eight and plenty of holes.
A course with a jetty start -1-2-4-center-6-finish, Georg, Jenny & Andy  on the L26 Desiree led the way followed by Hunter  Knip( Andy & Steve), Baby Blue( Nigel & Anton) and  L20 El Viente Peter & Crew. There was tight racing to No1 but once the spinnakers were up Baby Blue led from Desiree, Knip and El Viente . These positions remained unchanged to the finish.
