PARTINGTON PLATE #5 - Saturday 19 February 2011

A note from Tim Duguid:
Well done Pete and Kevin, comfortably taking the Partington Plate Series Trophy for a second time in two years!!However, the day belonged to Alan on his Dart way ahead of the fleet!!Team Odin also put one over Flirt this time, even with the handicap.A nice series to sail and good to see the bigger Van der Stadts,Thetas, etc involved.I hope that this trend continues next year!!Well done to all and thanks to the Race Officers for doing duty.

Peter "The Pink Pantser's" race report:
Race Officers Roy Shooter and Elspeth Gray set a long course for the final event of the Partington Plate series amidst building winds and a threatening storm. The course started at the Jetty to # 1, across to # 7 (Ashley / Pylon Bay), back to # 1, to # 6, to Finish at the jetty.
A good fleet of 10 boats lined up in the growing Easterly of about 10 to 12 knots.
Rob T on the 29er, Anton E on Dynamite and Alan B of the Dart were off to a quick start in the strong winds, and they raced off to # 1 outer can.
John Bellinger on JB 20 snarled a radio sailing buoy and that was the end of his race.
The torrential rain set in with scattered thunder and lightning in the distance. It became a very wet race but most of the time the wind held well after shifting to the west.
Tony / Hank on Odin were the first boat from the “rest of the fleet” to round # 1, then a fetch from # 1 towards # 7 at Pylon Bay. Flirt passed Odin (with No 1 Vs blade up) and led to # 7, and then all the way back to # 1 with Odin changing back to genoa 'on the run'. Flirt rounded # 1 and sat in the only hole of the dam as the wind went back to NE, allowing Odin to catch up.They were neck and neck down to # 6 where Odin edged ahead in the dying wind.
Knip, the Stadt 26 'Cheers', with Rob Atwell skippering, and Richard / Mary on Hunter 'Country Morning' caught the wind from behind and appeared from nowhere to catch the front runners.
In the end, a very close tussle and some great catch-up racing saw Odin, Flirt, Knip, Cheers and Country Morning finish within 11 minutes of each other after 2 hours of racing.
Alan B took line honours by over an hour on the Dart and Rob T and Anton E both showed DNF’s so not sure what happened to both these boats as they were so far ahead for much of the race. Thanks to Roy and Elspeth for doing bridge duty and to all participants for an enjoyable Partington Plate Series.

HMYC Club Champs and Monthly Mug #6

HMYC CLASS CHAMPS AND MONTHLY MUG #6 - Sunday 6 February 2011
(Report by Tim Duguid)
Well, the wind did not play ball on Sunday.
A VERY light south-easter came through towards mid-morning.Race Officer Rob Bell, ably assisted by two good ladies this time ( he found it such a chore!), took the fleet onto the water by 11h00. The sailors were eager to get going after a fairly long break since KZN Hunter provs. This resulted in numerous early starters and the RO having to signal a general recall in both of the races sailed on the day.
In the first race and No2 as the windward mark the re-united Team Odin showed good form, choosing the Thurlow side of the dam and Hybrid Theory choosing the dam wall side. Both made good water up to the mark with those playing the shifts in the middle not fairing as well.So it was Hybrid, Odin, Baby Blue around the top can with Essex hot on their heels. Unfortunately the wind died down during the run to leeward and bridge shortened course .
Result: 1.Hybrid 2.Odin 3.Baby Blue 4.Essex
Lack of wind had all off the water to enjoy lunch and a chat session on the Clubhouse verandah, while waiting for the wind to arrive. Dark clouds inland then indicated a thunderstorm starting to brew down Ashley Bay. This weather sign resulted in the fleet being sent out in a hurry to get the remaining two races in.
The course was again to No 2 and back to a leeward mark.Tight racing to the windward can saw practically the whole fleet of Hunters in a bow-to-stern procession around the mark. A quick gybe after the spinnaker hoist had Odin take an inside lead, after her slow start, over Hybrid with Essex and Baby Blue fairly closely matched and Flirt waiting to pounce. With Odin rounding the leeward can, a shortened course was signalled due to changeable wind conditions ahead of the approaching storm. With Odin having opened up a lead to the line, it was a dice to the finish by the rest
of the Hunters. Essex worked hard to get the inside advantage on Baby Blue, covering her to the finish and managing to sneak in ahead of Hybrid by shooting the pin end on the finish.
Result: 1.Odin 2.Essex 3.Hybrid 4.Baby Blue 5.Flirt
RO Bell and his assistants on board the good ship 'Paris Hilton' chose discretion and signalled the fleet home ahead of the approaching storm to close the days sailing.
Odin appears to be well placed in the George Duffin Series Trophy standings with Essex and Hybrid always in with a chance. The Monthly Mug was shared by Odin and Hybrid on equal points for the day. Hunter Silver Fleet standings still show 'The Doc' (Tim Kerry) ahead.
See you at the HMYC QUANTUM SAILS NINE HOUR ENDURANCE event on Saturday 26 February.
