Masthead # 4 – December 2012:

Firstly, my thanks must go to your Hon. Treasurer – Peter Forshaw – who’s done a good job in preparing a schedule of the running costs to date for the Club, and we now have a projected budget for the next 6 months going forward!!  Unfortunately we have recovered most of the 2012/2013 subs now – the outstanding ones will be made defaulters on the 1st December – so your Club won’t have much income coming in for the next six months.  We’ve had some large unforeseen expenses so far this season – the bank restoration, which is only partially completed; and we’ve managed to get the books officially audited for the past two seasons but this has cost more than anticipated.  Coupled with this is the fact that we have only two regattas at HMYC this season – the upcoming SASKZN regatta between Christmas and New Year, and the 9 Hour which will be at the beginning of March 2013 – all means is that we will have to be careful how much we spend for the next six months.  If you would like a copy of the audited accounts, please send an e-Mail to Heather – hmyc@mweb.co.za – and she’ll e-Mail one to you.

Your Committee has decided to scrap Oscar – she has served the Club well for many years, but we cannot keep her going any longer.  This means that we have to buy another power boat for the Club, which in turn means spending money!!!  We have budgeted R30000 for this, but this amount won’t cover the full cost of a boat and a 15hp motor.  Some Club members have expressed an interest in helping to contribute towards the costs involved for the new boat, so if you would like to make a donation, the Club banking details are as follows:

Bank – Standard Bank
Branch – Howick – 058325
Account number – 52445275
Deposit reference – Donation, or New Club boat

In December the Club will be busy with the SASKZN regatta, which will be held from the 27th to the 30th of December.  Come along and have a look – there will be some good racing to watch as it incorporates the Sprog National Championships and Laser Provincial Championships.

This is forward planning for you – on Saturday 2nd March 2013 HMYC will again have the 9 Hour event.  This is a fun day for all – spectators and competitors alike – and we’re hoping to have an entry of 100 boats!!!

As this will be the final Masthead of 2012, your Committee would like to take the opportunity to wish you and your family a happy Christmas and a good 2013.  We wish you lots of good sailing for the New Year!!

Boat request

If you are interested just email us and I will put you in contact

Dear Paul

Perhaps you could kindly advise :

I am from Fourways, JHB , visiting my mother hat Amber Valley in  Howick for a few weeks  between 15 December and 10 January,

I wanted to find out if any of your members / the club would hire out a Hobie 16 / DART /  to use for a week. I will pay them R2000. So it may be ideal for some one with a boat , that is not used much i.e. if the owner is away . etc

I don't mind a bit older boat , but obviously in sailable condition and not a complete barge. I have a few years of experience of sailing H16 in Fishoek and TSC in the Cape. But moved to JHB last year. The boat would be well looked after as it is just myself and my brother (who is visiting from the UK ) who would sail her.

Perhaps u would mind putting this ad on your website / notice board .

If there is no H16 available then I would also look at a H14 Turbo/ Other

hope you can advise

Cheers

Graham

MASTHEAD # 3 - 2012

Some of our members have recently made improvements around the Club at their own cost and our thanks go to these members for their generous contribution.

CLUB REGALIA

To start off the season we have a selection of new design items available to members, all displaying the Club insignia and we are confident that they will appeal to members.

Polo Shirts - Navy and Light blue        R 150
Caps - Choice of 2 styles in beige        R 50 and R 60
Burgees                    R 50

They are on display in the Club House but Hes can send you photos if you wish to view and order via email.  His e-Mail address is - hjh@telkomsa.net

MOORINGS

We still have members who have not complied with the deadline to check their moorings. This is a safety issue for all boats which are sitting on moorings. Members in default are reminded that a salvage cost will apply if their boat breaks loose – the additional risk is that the complete mooring could be lost.

MOORING IDENTIFICATION

If you have a mooring which is not in use/unoccupied please identify it to the Mooring Committee so they can tag and register it - by the end of Dec 2012. If, after this date, we are unable to identify a mooring which we consider to be unsafe it will be removed from the Dam or put out of use.

Unfortunately, we are being left with no option but to take a hard line stance on this issue.

CLUB BAR

Members will be pleased to know that the Club has taken over operation of the Bar, so income from the Bar now goes to Club funds.

We want to keep prices competitive as a service to our members, but we need volunteers behind the Bar to do so - if we have to hire labour to run the bar then part of this benefit is lost.  If you can give some of your time please give your name to Hes Hamilton who will arrange the schedule to fit in with your available time.  Help will be always be on hand so no one will be ‘left high and dry ‘!!

Monthly Mug

An overcast day but pleasant sailing conditions with an Easterly blowing about 8 to 10.  Keith doing the race officer honours chose an interesting course from the normal windward leeward sprints .A long course up to 2 ,then tight reach to 3 , down to 5 , back to 3 ,then 5 ,then finish.

9 Hunters out, 1 first class 7 and L20.So not a bad turnout.

First race saw Essex and smoken Oakem (Ant Mac and Mickey) at top can .Ant finally finding getting his boat going fast!(persistence paying off!)Followed closely by new team up of Rob Tarbie and Mark Patrick.(So Marks new boat finally sailing! and also the promise of a very good team!) Then the usuals Odin ,Nigel and CJ etc hot on the heals. Then after no 5 ,3/4 of fleet went off to 2 instead of 3 (pitty as they all had to suffer the result of a DsQ). Only 3 boats , Tarbie /Patrick,Odin and Essex went to the correct mark! At this rounding Essex was in the lead until there was a spinny foul and Tarbie and Odin catched up.This saw all sorts of drama at leeward can .Essex manged to just get in ahead of Odin (who got ahead of Patrick/Tarbie) .

Race 2 was shortened as was slightly too long so the first round of the course was sailed. Essex and the Phillips went left and this managed them to get a nice lift onto the can to come in first and second at top can. Unfortunate for the Phillips's Ant Mac managed to pip them at the finish. Mr Wilkes and the gang from RN sailed well to get a 2nd on boat handicap this race although way in the lead the handicap brought them back to 2nd . So on handicap obviously Joe and Tim taking the race.

Something new happened we went in for lunch at 2pm! I think the principle is good but we need to come in around 12.30 ie get 2 short races done then lunch ,then back on water at about 2pm for the last race. It was nice to have people socializing at lunch and also more support for our caterer Debbie.

Anyway the last race saw a few pull out . But Essex got it again ,followed too closely by Smaoken Oakem , then Tarbie/Patrick.

GD series sees Essex leading, Hunter Trophy and silver fleet are led by Joe and Tim ,then Monthly mug was taken by Essex.

On Sunday is the final Partington plate long distance series at 14.30

Cheers
Tim

George Duffin /Monthly Mug 2 September 2012:

First official racing got away on Sunday .It started off rather chilly and then progressed to become a glorious day. Race officers Clive and Jeremy set a very long windward leeward course and thus was only 1 lap done in each race.
Not a bad turnout of 7 hunters, 2 extras and what looks like a resurgence of L20 as they had 3 boats on the water!
The wind was blowing the usual NE off the dam wall and blew to about a max of 8- 10 knots.
First race saw Essex just pip Mr Wilkes and gang at the top can. Eventually the  Beneteau came in ahead of the Hunter .Followed by Hybrid theory and the extra of Rob .
2nd  race saw very Fluky winds with team Odin even hoisting their bag up the first beat. Hybrid was nicely ahead with Derek close behind.Essex and Rob on the extra went towards curry bay in search of breeze and managed to reach around the side of the course to slot in closely behind the leaders..Derek 1st ,Hybrid second ,L20 Tantrum 3rd .
3rd race was unfortunately very pin biased and was a matter of who won the pin  were to win the first beat.finish was Derek again!  2nd Essex 3rd saw a nice tussle between Odin ,Hybrid and smokem Oakem(Ant) .Odin holding on to clinch 3rd,Hybrid 4th.
All in a nice turnout and pleasant day.!

Masthead News

The 2012 AGM has come and gone, and this is the first Masthead of the new 2012/2013 season …  Thanks to everyone who came to the AGM – there was a good attendance  and the lunch and prize-giving both went off well.  The following were elected to the 2012/2013 Committee:
President – Rob Barker
Vice-President – Robin McIntosh
Commodore – Brenda Tarboton
Vice Commodore Sailing – no-one was elected, so if you’d like the position, please let anyone on the Committee know …
Rear Commodore House – Hes Hamilton
Hon Secretary – Clive Waddy
Hon Treasurer – Peter Forshaw
General Committee members – Anton Ellens, Tony Cockerill, Pierre van Daele, Jeremy Bellengere
Special Projects – Rob Bell
This year your Club has an entry in the Lipton Cup – this is being sailed in L26s again, from  the 17th to the 24th August, and HMYC is being represented by Craig Millar and his crew.  Craig is a well-known sailor – he has competed in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, finishing a very creditable second, and his company – Quantum sails – is the main sponsor of the HMYC annual 9 Hour event.  The 2012 HMYC Lipton team sailed together for the first time in the recent L26 KZN Provincials, finishing second, which bodes well for the future.  We are very pleased to have such a team representing HMYC, and wish them well for the Lipton Cup!  Here’s a report on the recent L26 Provincials:
This year’s Lipton Cup, to be held out of FBYC, will see the battle of three strong KZN teams, in the hopes that the cup can return to the sunny skies and warm seas of Durban. In the build-up to the Lipton Cup, MSC week hosted the L26 KZN provincials which saw top teams training and racing hard for the podium positions. The tension was palpable the weekend before the regatta as boats were prepped and finishing touches applied. The PYC entry of Choose Life Element came out guns blazing on the first day with a young, local crew on-board. The team landed two wins on the first day of racing while the Royal Natal entry of Orion B2G2 were just behind them with two seconds and a first. Although Craig Millar, Dallen Roos and Ryan Avery on the team Quantum L26 had been training a lot together, the addition of two new crew members in the form of Paul Vivian and Francesco De Vita meant that the crew needed a day or so to iron out some issues and come together as a team. On day two team Quantum showed their true colours and strode to victory in two windy races while Orion B2G2 scored one first place. Day three of racing brought with it very difficult conditions. A course was set in a dying, shifty breeze and a shortened course flag saw the boats heading straight to the finish after the downward mark, permitting Orion B2G2 to nab their third victory of the regatta. Although a second race was started on day three it was quickly abandoned due to a dying breeze and a threat of a storm brewing. Tired and broken crews pitched up to the start of day four, which brought with it another tough days racing and another three hard races. HMYC Colourpress managed to win another two races and Orion B2G2 won one. With a total of ten races sailed, a discard at the end of day four saw Orion B2G2 and HMYC Colourpress on exactly the same points and with the same number of firsts going into the final day of racing. The Choose Life team on-board the PYC entry had all but secured third place. A fight to the finish ensued on day five, seeing Orion B2G2 and team Quantum sailing each other past marks and away from the course as they cover tacked and fought to steal each other’s wind. These games allowed the CT naval entry to sneak through in order to win a race; their first one despite some good sailing and not so great starts on the previous days of racing. Orion B2G2 managed to pull ahead of team Quantum due to their good teamwork gained from their previous Lipton campaign, allowing the Royal Natal entry to beat HMYC Colourpress in both races on the final day to win the L26 class as well as the KZN L26 provincials.’
We’re currently finding that non-members who’ve bought a boat from a HMYC member are gaining access to the Club via the seller’s gate entry disc.  This is obviously not good for your club, as in this way people are enjoying the benefits of the Club, without becoming a member of the Club. The gate entry disc is for HMYC Club members only – this means that if you sell your keelboat or dinghy, and then resign from HMYC, please don’t pass your entry disc on to the new owner.  Please return your gate entry disc to Heather – the Club Administrator.  The person who has bought your boat should join the Club, if they’re not already a member, and get their own gate entry disc.
If you have a keelboat on a mooring at the Dam – please will you check your mooring?  We’re having some strong winds at the moment; August is traditionally the windy month at Midmar, and already some keelboats have broken away from their moorings.  So if you don’t want to find your keelboat washed up on the bank, please check your mooring.
If you own a Halcat, and are thinking of selling it, Island Sailing Club is looking for Halcats to buy.  You can contact Graham Weyer at 084 547 0115, or bigg71@ovi.com.
The 2012/2013 Sailing Programme will soon be available – the finishing touches are currently being made to it.  Once again, Marius and Caprice van Vuuren will be organising social sailing for those keelboat owners who don’t want to race, so if you are a social sailor, they will be contacting you soon.  However, the Opening Cruise is scheduled for Sunday 26th August – please put this into your diary …
If you haven’t yet received an HMYC subs statement for the 2012/2013 season, please will you contact Heather, the Club Administrator, as these subs are now due.  The subs statement was e-Mailed out to members in late May/early June, so it is possible that you have received your statement, but haven’t realised what it is, and so not paid it yet??  Heather will send you another statement if you need it, and she can be contacted on 083 312 7707, or 033 330 4158.  She is at the Club on a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, from 09h00 to 13h00 in the off season.

VonKlemperer Series Hmyc

Well done Mark,1 point win over Tim and Joe Philpps !So the series winner is Mark Patrick on his extra sailing well this time a mere 10 seconds behind Rob Tarbie.

Rob Bell's report as follows:

The race started at 14h00 with a light to medium wind switching constantly between an easterly to a gusty south easterly, once the yachts had rounded Mark No 2 with Joe and Tim in the lead Rob settled down on the run to No 4 with Mark closing the gap so by the time No4 was reached Rob and Mark were ahead on the reach to No 5, Mark and Rob had a close tussle and it was only just before the centre mark that Rob managed to pull ahead of Mark, but in the mean time ignoring the tussling pair Joe and Tim rounded the centre mark first, from then on it was a down wind race to No  6 with Rob laying the mark first.

The final beat saw the yachts close together finishing exactly 10seconds apart. Willie sailing alone in his Hunter came in fourth while a crew of Michael House boys who had not entered the race but sailed the course in a 420 came in just ahead of Willie sailing alone in his Hunter. Everyone felt that it was a great ending to the Von Klemperer Series.

Next week the Brass Monkey series on Sunday .Remember no Galley open. Also someone required for race o duty .Briefing at 13;15

His own design. 3rd over the line was Rob. Tarboton in his Extra beating George Muller in the Soling.

HMYC MASTHEAD # 9: MAY 2012

HMYC MASTHEAD # 9: MAY 2012

SAILING PROGRAMME
(From Rob Bell 033 3442182, cell 0739618006)

Sundays 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th May and 3rd June: The Von Klemperer series consisting of five races (one race per day) will be held on these Sundays.  It is a medium distance race around fixed bouys, and the racing is open to all classes. A pre-race briefing will take place on the verandah at 13h15, with a jetty start at 14h00.  After the final race on the 3rd June, snacks will be served in the pub. The galley will be open for the Von Klemperer series of races.

On Sundays 10th and 17th June the Brass Monkey series of races will be held.  This consists of two races, only, one race on each day.  This is also a medium distance race around fixed bouys, and is open to all classes.  A pre-race briefing will take place on the verandah at 13h15, with a jetty start at 14h00.             The galley won’t be open for the Brass Monkey series of races, so please bring your own food and drinks.

Attendance at the pre-race briefings is not compulsory, but it is advisable to attend them as even though the course directions should be posted on the Board before the race by the Race Officer, last minute changes can be made.

For those who enjoyed the best yachting facility in the country, thanks for your participation in this year’s sailing events, and to those Race Officers who gave of their time to provide you with well managed sailing events, thanks, your effort is much appreciated.  Without you the sailing calendar would not exist.  Finally, please support the incoming Committee, and let HMYC see you on the water in the coming season.

YOUTH SAILING

The RS Tera class in South Africa is a relatively new youth class and is proving to be a great way for young kids (8 years to 16 years) to begin sailing and then move into racing relatively easily and quickly. The boat is a single handed boat with two sail options, the Sport and Pro. Interestingly the Pro sail is 2.8 sqm which is 1 sqm larger than the Laser 4.7! This makes the boat really exciting for the older kids.

There have been two Nationals in South Africa since the class was launched. Both the Nationals in 2011 and 2012 were sailed at Pine Lake Marina in Sedgefield which has been transformed into a premier dingy location. Last year the Nationals were hosted by GLYC and this year by KYC. Both events had turnouts of 35 plus boats which shows a healthy class.
In KZN there are 6 active sailors with 5 of the kids from PYC and Nic Forshaw from HMYC. Sail Africa also uses the Tera as training boats. The KZN kids have made a great attempt to attend the provincials sailed around the country.  Nic came 3rd at the KZN provincials held in September last year at HMYC, 12th at the Eastern Cape Provincials held at Mosselbaai and First at the North Vaal Provincials at LDYC this April. He also came 12th at the Nationals at Pine lake Marina and finished 7th for the series.

This has given him the opportunity to go over to Lake Iseo in Lombardy Italy to sail in the World Championships in August 2012. This will be held from 6th to 10th August at the magnificent Associazione Nautica Sebina (ANS) Yacht Club. Any on and off the water training gladly accepted from willing HMYC sailors!!

Nic is currently in grade 8 at Michaelhouse and has been the lone sailing voice at the school. His perseverance has paid off with a new master, Mathew Higginson, taking the reins as sailing representative. At this stage the sport will be recognised as a club activity but Nic is determined to make it a full school sport!! Michaelhouse have also been very supportive of his endeavours giving the necessary time off school to sail regattas and the opportunity to come to HMYC whenever possible to get time on the water. Nic has also sailed on Mirrors participating in 2 Nationals and 2 Youth Nationals and loves the opportunity of sailing on a Soling whenever he can.

We look forward to this becoming a catalyst to getting Youth Sailing off to a positive start for the next sailing season.

OTHER CLUB INFORMATION:

Club Trophies
Again, I’d like to remind you that if you have any of the Club’s trophies at home, please can you return them to the Club as soon as possible, as the AGM and prize-giving is coming up soon, and they will need to be engraved for the new winners?  The AGM and prize-giving will once again be a combined event, to be held on Sunday 24th June, up at the Club.  The exact time of this will be announced closer to the date, but it will be at lunchtime.

Club Committee
And, if you are prepared to help with the running of your Club and can stand on the Club Committee next season, in any portfolio, please can you give your name to one of the Committee members and your help will be gratefully accepted. To date there have been no nominations for the important positions of Vice Commodore Sailing, or Secretary

Boat and Trailer Parking
The invoices for subs for the 2012/2013 year will be sent out shortly – we’re going to try to e-Mail as many as possible, so please can you make sure that Heather has your correct e-Mail address?

Remember, if you wish to have Hes ensure that your boats and trailers have the 2012/3 stickers attached, then please contact him and he will be more than happy to oblige.

Any boat/trailer which can’t be identified as belonging to an HMYC member, will be removed from the parking area and padlocked until such times as the owner appears and verifies that the appropriate fees have been paid.

The Gantry is being moved to alongside the Boat House and a concrete base will be laid, so that with adjacent electricity and water a much improved working area will be available to members. Once this is in place painting and major renovation work will no longer be permitted in the tarred parking area. The tarred area must be protected as the Club will not be able to absorb the cost of having to resurface this area.

Those members who visit the Club regularly will notice the Committee is upgrading areas in and around the Club House to improve facilities for our members and this process will be on-going.

Trailer Maintenance
There are many trailers in the park which have flat tyres and tow hitches which need lubrication/maintenance. As a service to members the Committee will offer to look after these items for any member who wants to ensure that when they arrive their trailer is ready to use. If you wish to avail yourself of this facility please let Hes know (preferably by email) and he will provide details and organise it. The charge will be R100/annum added to your 2012/13 membership fees.

Boat Shed:
The padlock on the boat shed at the far end of the car park had to be replaced recently, so if you have boats in there, you will need to get a new key from Hes Hamilton.  His contact details are above; otherwise if you want to get access to the boat shed on a sailing day, and don’t have a key, ask Thammi – the groundsman - as he has a key.  However, Thammi locks the boat shed before he leaves the Club at 16h00 on a weekend so please ensure that you have all your things out of the boat shed/ put all your things back by 15h30.

MASTHEAD # 8

Club Trophies
If you have any of the Club’s trophies at home, please can you return them to the Club as soon as possible, but definitely before the end of April, as the AGM and prize-giving is coming up soon, and they will need to be engraved for the new winners?  The AGM and prize-giving will once again be a combined event, to be held on Sunday 24th June, up at the Club.  The exact time of this will be announced closer to the date, but it will be at lunchtime.

Club Committee
If you are prepared to help with the running of your Club and can stand on the Club Committee next season, in any portfolio, please can you give your name to one of the Committee members and your help will be gratefully accepted.

Sailing programme
The Closing Cruise will be held at the Club on Sunday 22nd April – and the race will be for the Commodore’s Hamper.  Thereafter there will be the popular von Klemperer and Brass Monkey series which will be sailed during May and June.

Power Boat Certificates of Competency
Your Vice Commodore Sailing – Rob Bell – is requesting all members who have current Certificates of Competence related to skippering a power boat and who are prepared to man the club powered craft from time to time, to please forward a copy of their Certificate to robbell @ushomi .co .za , or leave/send a copy with/to the Club Administrator.

This, according to a SAMSA Appointed Official, is now required to allow for a general tightening up of the rule that a licensed skipper must be in charge of a powered craft driven by an engine exceeding 15HP and that the onus is on the club to provide proof that we have competent licensed skippers to man our craft, when re-registering our craft.

Boat and Trailer Parking
The Club faces a problem with boats/trailers parked in bays without having either paid a parking fee or they are occupying another member’s bay.

In Masthead No. 6 this problem was also addressed and to date Hes Hamilton has received only two responses from members informing him of their situation.

The EXCO Committee have therefore decided that the following steps are necessary to bring order and discipline in the use of onshore facilities. It is not acceptable for example that a member who has paid for a parking bay finds on arrival at the Club that it is occupied by a trailer or boat that cannot be identified.

1) We are approaching the new membership year and members are requested to ensure that their boats and trailers have the 2012/3 stickers attached. If you wish to have Hes do this for you then please contact him and he will be more than happy to oblige.

2) Effective immediately, any boat/trailer that we cannot identify will be removed from the parking area and padlocked until such times as the owner appears and verifies that the appropriate fees have been paid.

Gantry
The use of the Gantry is subject to a fee as the equipment must be maintained and it is only fair that those members using it make a contribution to these costs.

A fee of R50 per week will apply and bookings MUST be made via Heather Marshall or Hes Hamilton and paid in advance.

Those members who visit the Club regularly will notice the Committee is upgrading areas in and around the Club House to improve facilities for our members and this process will continue.

Last GD and Monthly Mug

Sunny day but light variable breeze coming out of Orient bay.Bad news and Essex were on equal points going into the final day.A bit of match racing was in order for the day ,Rob Samways and Sandy doing the honours as race officers. The race started out in about 5 knots but on the final lap to finish the wind died to 1 knot and less .Bad news and Essex exchanged places regularly but Essex held the slight lead to get the first race,Second race was also very light Essex got away nicely to a comfortable lead but then wind died and this saw bad news right on the heals of Essex .Bad news managed to overtake Essex close to the leeward can but a puff coming in from port was noticed a little earlier than bad news and Essex was first to round ,Shortened course was blown.,so this was to finish Essex unfortunately had a bad rounding and tried to keep momentum going by staying on port.Bad news tacked immediately after rounding and managed to find breeze and got in a comfortable win over Essex. So boiled down to the last race to whom would get the GD trophy ;with Essex and bad news on equal points. The breeze finally settled a bit and the final race got away.Essex was well ahead but then at top can the breeze died again.Essex was again slowly hauled in by Bad news.Rob blew shortened course and at this stage the boats had bunched up   close together.A slick gybe by bad news inside of Essex saw bad news win just seconds ahead.

Thus GD champions are Luke and Stephen Wagner, just a single point ahead of Essex. The closest GD thus far!!Luke and Stephen also managed to claim the Hunter Trophy (the handicap trophy). The monthly mug belonged to Rob Tarbie on his Extra. Also greatr to see that Tim and Joe Phillips newcomers have claimed the Silver  fleet trophy ,sailing consistently better. So well done to them!!

Please realize that the GD results and Hun ter trophy are affected by average points awarded to those sailors that did bridge duty so you will see that certain sailors have a result on the day they did race duty.

Kind regards

Tim Duguid

MASTHEAD # 7 – April 2012

For the past two months your Club has at times been a veritable hive of activity – we’ve had the
Quantum 9 Hour, the 2012 Inter Schools regatta, and lastly the 2012 Hunter Nationals.
The Quantum 9 Hour was a great success!! We had 70 boats of all shapes and sizes entered, and
there was a DJ who played music all day at the Club on Saturday, as well as into the night, ensuring
that those on the shore also had a good time. We also had visits by the Land Rover Experience
contestants – one of their tasks for the day was to complete a lap on a keelboat and thanks must go
to the keelboat skippers who hosted them on their boats. I wonder how the contestants enjoyed the
sailing, as opposed to driving?

This year we had a tracking system fitted to most of the boats, and this enabled the crews to see
where their boat was lying when they came ashore for the change-over as the position of each
tracked boat was shown on a screen in the hall.
We also had some games organized on the lawn for the younger members, but as it was a hot day
they weren’t made to do too much exercise!!! In order to give the DJ a break, and also for something
different, there was a live band which played on the club verandah while we were waiting for the
results to be worked out, as well as a ‘cook your own’ supper which allowed people to mingle and
socialize while they were cooking their food. In all it was a great event, and once again our heartfelt
thanks go to Quantum for their generous sponsorship which made it all possible. Thanks must also
go to the people who sponsored prizes for the event, as well as all the ‘back room’ boys who harried
these people for prizes, and helped with the preparations for the event. And, of course, the recorders
who had the unenviable task of trying to make out a sail number of one boat which was hidden
behind another!!! We were fortunate with the weather – the wind stayed light to moderate which
meant that there weren’t large groups of boats coming simultaneously over the ‘line’, and the fastest
boat did a total of 15 laps.
On the 10th and 11th March, your Club hosted the KwaZulu-Natal Inter-Schools regatta. This regatta is where scholars compete in any type of dinghy and sail for their school, and there was a small entry
comprising Lasers, Optimists, Teras, and a couple of Mirrors. There were some new faces in the fleet,
and hopefully they will continue sailing now that they’ve completed their first regatta!!

Then, from the 17th to the 21st of March, HMYC hosted the Hunter Nationals regatta. There was an
entry of 18 boats for this regatta, with some sailors making the trip from Gauteng for the event.
Racing was hotly contested over three days, with Luke and Stephen Wagner taking the victor’s spoils.
The showers in the men’s change room have been re-tiled, and are looking quite smart in their Sharks
colours!!! Thanks to Hes Hamilton for arranging this and doing the work.

If you have any of the Club’s trophies at home, please can you return them to the Club as soon as
possible, but definitely before the end of April, as the AGM and prize-giving is coming up soon, and
they will need to be engraved for the new winners. The AGM and prized-giving will once again be a
combined event, to be held on Sunday 24th June, up at the Club. The exact time of this will be
announced closer to the date, but it will be at lunchtime. If you are prepared to help with the running
of your Club and can stand on the Club Committee next season, in any portfolio, please can you give
your name to one of the Committee members and your help will be gratefully accepted.
The Closing Cruise will be held at the Club on Sunday 22nd April – and the race will be for the
Commodore’s Hamper. Thereafter there will be the von Klemperer and Brass Monkey series which will be sailed during May and June.

Note from the Commodore:
Professor Winton ‘Wog’ Hawksworth
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Professor Winton Hawksworth, or Wog
Hawksworth as everyone fondly new him. Wog was commodore of the Henley-Midmar Yacht Club for a longer period of time than any other person and the club grew from strength to strength under his guidance. A simple glance at the honours boards at the club serves as a reminder of the huge
commitment he gave to the club that he loved so much. He served Henley-Midmar Yacht Club as Vice Commodore Sailing for 2 years, Commodore for a total of 9 years and President for a total of 5 years.

In terms of sport administration, his career is legendary at club, provincial, national and international
levels. Just a few of the numerous items follow:
· Chairman of the then Natal Yachting Association for many years
· Race Officer for the Windsurfer World Championships in Plettenberg Bay
· Race officer for numerous National Championships all around the country.
· KZN Councillor to South African Sailing
· Chairman of the National Olympic Committee of SA Doping Commission
· Recipient of the 1991 Stan Jeffrey Trophy Award for his work on the Olympic bodies and for
working towards unity between CASA and SAYRA
· South African Sailing’s Medical Officer

Wog was active in sailing at Midmar for many years. His two sons Douglas and Mark grew up sailing
at Midmar and his wife Pauline always provided the support needed for his numerous endeavours. We wish to offer our sincere condolences to his family in this difficult time, but we also need to give
thanks for his life and all that he did for our great sport of sailing.
