A brief summary of the sailing calendar for the month of December 2013

Sunday 1^st  December

George Duffin Trophy Series:  Races,  (10), (11) & (12) This series is only open to the Hunter Class, but all other classes of yachts and catamarans  can compete in the Open Class Championships, this will be sailed over the same course, the start being five (5) minutes after the Hunter start. Both briefings will be at 10h15…sharp. A Monthly Mug award will be made based on the overall sailing results for the day.

Sunday 8^th  December

Ron Western Marathon Race This will be a long distance race, the course will be set on the day, according to the wind strengths and direction. The race is open to all classes of yachts and catamarans, results being based on skipper and boat handicaps. Briefing will be at 10h30…..sharp. There will be a fleet start at 11h00 from between a start mark and the jetty. The course will follow designated fixed marks.  Enjoy a social drink in the pub after the race and bring your sundowners and/or braai along.

Saturday 14^th – Friday 20^th December.         SAS Youth Nationals

There will be no official club sailing due to the SAS Youth Nationals taking place at the club from the 14^th to the 20^th  of December , but members may still use the club facilities and go sailing, but please remember to keep clear of the actual racing area. Those who are willing to help during the regatta please give me a call.

Thursday 26^th  / Monday 30^th December .  SAS KZN Provincial Championships

There will be no official club sailing due to the SAS KZN Provincial Championships taking place at the club from the 26^th to the 30^th  of December , but members may still use the club facilities and go sailing, but please remember to keep clear of the actual racing area. Those who are willing to help during the regatta please give me a call.

Tuesday 31^st December 2013 / Wednesday 1^st January 2014

There will be no official function arranged at the club, but come along and see the New Year

in. Form your own party, braai fires will be lit, but the bar and galley will not be open, the club will just have been through two major regattas and most will need a rest, therefore you are welcome to bring your own drinks and food to the club premises, which will be open in case of foul weather. Relax and enjoy the club’s facilities and may my sailing committee extend their best wishes for the festive season and 2014.

General Information and Requests.

(1)     Club Members who wish to go cruising during any of the above events are welcome to do so, but PLEASE remember to keep clear of the racing area.      

(2)  Attendance at briefings is not compulsory, but it is advisable to attend them as 

even though course directions should be posted early by the race officer, last

 minute changes can be made. (This only applies to HMYC Club Events)

(3)     Camping in the club grounds is only permissible during organized events, sites 

       must be booked via the Club Administrators Office. Contact Connie Gray

       on 0833127707 or 033 3304158 during her club administration hours.

             (or complete the camping form as per the Notice of Regatta)

(4)    Any member  prepared to give of their time to help with regattas and club sailing please do not  be afraid of stepping forward, we need your help especially those who have a SAMSA skippers certificate, or are prepared to help with rescue during

the two events to be held in December.

(5)    Final call any member who has an inflatable RIB with at least a 30hp motor, or knows someone or organizations that have one, please contact Rob Bell. 033 3442182

the loan or hire of eight of these RIB’s or similar craft for the SAS Youth Nationals.

The dates these craft will be required is from the 15^th to the 20^th December 2013.

Please remember, your race officers and my committee, are there to provide you with well managed sailing events, be it serious or social. Please approach us if you need help or if you are unhappy about something. We are willing to assist and will do our best to sort out your problems.

MASTHEAD # 4 – November 2013

Arrangements for the 2013 Youth Nationals, which takes place at HMYC from the 14th to the 20th December are getting into high gear now.  I’m sure it will be a good regatta, and to all those who are helping in any way, a big thank you, as without your efforts it wouldn’t happen!!

We are expecting a large entry for this event and as a result we will have to move some of the keelboats and dinghies which are parked in the car park, as this is where the competitors will park their boats.  So, if you have a keelboat or dinghy which is parked in either row A or row B of the car park – these are the two rows of parking nearest the water – it will have to be moved to make way for the dinghies which will be parking there.  We will move boats from row A and B closer up to those parked in row C, effectively closing off the road between these rows of parking.  We’re planning to do this move the week of the 9th to the 12th December.  If you want to move your keelboat/dinghy yourself, then please can you do this by Monday 9th December, otherwise it will be moved for you.  Boats which are moved will be moved back immediately after the Youth Nationals regatta has finished, as we will need the road again for the SASKZN regatta which starts on the 27th December.

If you are thinking of visiting your Club during the Youth Nationals regatta, unfortunately you won’t be able to bring your car into the Club grounds and park in the car park – you will have to park your car on the open field behind the Club and walk to the Club from there.  We will have a security guard in attendance at this area.

If you offered to help Derek Wilkes refurbish the Sprogs which are currently parked on the grass by the large boat shed at the end of the car park, please will you give Connie Gray your details as Derek would like to contact you and get started on this project as soon as possible?

If you have paid your 2013/2014 subs, but haven’t yet got your new membership card and stickers, please will you collect them from Connie?  Her office hours are 09h00 to 13h00 Tuesday and Friday, and 10h00 to 14h00 on a sailing day at the weekend.

REPORT BACK FROM HES HAMILTON - MOORINGS

Since we introduced the Mooring programme last year we have had no incidents of boats breaking loose from their moorings so the Mooring Committee will continue to impose the compulsory checks required in order to ensure we keep boats safe and secure. Recent checks show that it does not appear necessary to do a major check annually on each mooring so a major check will now only be required every 2 years - but a top end check must be completed every 6 months.

Regrettably there are still a number of moorings that have not been subject to any check as we are unable to identify the owner due to no boat currently being attached to the mooring.

IF ANY MEMBER HAS NOT HAD THEIR MOORING CHECKED BY THE MOORING COMMITTEE (OR NOT REQUESTED A CHECK ) THEN THE MOORING WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE DAM UNLESS THEY ADVISE AND IDENTIFY THEIR MOORING TO HES HAMILTON ( 0722254230 ) BEFORE THE END OF NOVEMBER 2013.

BOAT PARKING

An on-going problem is either boats parked in the wrong bay or no stickers on the boats or trailers. Unless we are able to identify the owners and confirm they are paid up members then the boats will be removed and the bay reallocated. Please ensure you apply the 2013/14 stickers to your equipment and avoid unnecessary hassle for all concerned. Hes Hamilton on request will fit the stickers for you.

It is in everyone’s interest to maintain an orderly system as putting a boat in the wrong bay creates a chain reaction throughout the parking area.

ABANDONED EQUIPMENT

There are a number of boats which have been placed on grass at the end of the premises and they appear to have been abandoned, if you feel you may have a boat that falls into this category it is strongly suggested you visit the Club and identify your boat. We cannot continue to collect boats or offer free parking so unless we can identify the owner of every boat on the premises by end of December 2013 they will be subject to an auction some time in the new year.

SALE OF BOATS

Please be reminded that members are obligated to advise our Administration Secretary – Connie Gray - when you sell your boat, and provide Connie with contact information of the new owner/s – this is not always done therefore we do request you let us know if there is any change of status.

As this will probably be the last Masthead of 2013 - mainly because we’re all busy with the Youth Nationals organization at the moment – myself and the Committee would like to take the opportunity of wishing you and your families all the best for the festive season, and also for 2014!
