HMYC Class Championships and Monthly Mug #4 - Sunday 5 December

(Report by Tim Duguid)
A very pleasant day for sailing with a moderate breeze of about eight knots blowing from the East, later switching to SE. Tim Duguid did the honours as Race Officer for the day and, by his own admission, found the task of doing it single-handedly quite a challenge !!!
Unfortunately numbers were lacking on the water with five Hunters and Georg and Clive on the L26.RO Tim had the first race off at about 11h15 with the two-lap course up to No 2 (Seaport Supply) and back to the leeward can.
Rob and Jared sailed very well and seemed to outpace all the others, taking all 3 races and the Monthly Mug very comfortably.Tussles developed between Flirt and Odin with the first race going Odin's way. The second race saw Flirt pip Odin to take second on the line with a starboard/port scenario protest a close call. The final race of the day saw Odin take second from Flirt.
Tim Kerry appears to be sailing better and better and is now leading the Hunter Silver Fleet Trophy standings quite comfortably. Well done to them. Louis Legrange was also there as usual, sailing with his young son and even bravely hoisting the bag in some of the gusty runs.
Results show Odin's Eye at the top of rankings with Hybrid presently in second spot. Essex Girl is still in with a good chance at the top as average points are calculated at the end of series, when race officer duties performed are considered.

Next up........ The Big One!! Hunter Provincials!!
Come and join us.
So far we have a regatta with ten boats but this is a far cry from the usual seventeen!!!

See you all then!!

HMYC - THE MASTHEAD

THE MASTHEAD

November 2010

HENLEY MIDMAR YACHT CLUB
PO Box 1151, Howick 3290
hmyc@mweb.co.za / www.hmyc.org

OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER 2010 NEWS

On behalf of the club and all of our members, we wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Wagner family on the loss of their father and grandfather.

My apologies for not sending out the Masthead last month but were moving house and that is not a lot of fun. Those that have been out recently will have seen that we are extending the slipway towards the jetty while the water level is low and this has progressed to the extent that we anticipate it being in use by the Christmas regatta. Thanks to Rob Tarby and Pete Goble for all their sterling work. On the repair and replacement side, you will also notice that we have fitted a new kitchen sink, drainage boards and cupboards at the back of the kitchen to replace the ugly, old and unhealthy arrangement that existed there for so many years. The new fridge is in, the old one sold and with the lounge suites the club is starting to take on a new look.

We are arranging to repair and replace the side fence down to the water line to improve security with the low water levels and the back gate will also be replaced with a sliding one.

Our erstwhile secretary is battling away in a somewhat small office and with very little room to work so we are looking for a kind member that may have a decent size (large) desk to donate to her. Please contact Heather at the club or any of the EXCO members.

We have two regattas coming up in December. The first being the Hunter KZN Provincials and we ask all Hunter sailors to support this. The second is the big Christmas Regatta between Xmas and the New Year. Apart from the sailing, the social side promises to be a lot of fun so come on out and support the regatta. The NOR/SI are available on the website.

The Catamaran regatta was well organised by Allan Barr and although only 6 boats entered, the profile of HMYC was raised and we have been requested to make this an annual event.

We have been advised by KZN Wildlife that the camping tariffs have been increased for next year and please note that all camping must be booked with the secretary. Heather has details of the new tariff. Matt Jackson was recently transferred up to the Berg and at his farewell party, we presented him with a beautiful book from all members past and present as a small thanks for his great friendship and assistance over the years.

Please will all members note that ANY function at the club for business or larger private parties needs to be booked with the Secretary. Private use will cost R550 whether it is on the veranda or otherwise as the club still has to clear up, clean and maintain toilets etc so we ask that all members respect this rule. We love seeing people there but it does involve extra work. In addition, please note that with our liquor licence now in place, no private liquor may be brought on to the club premises for an area extending to the roadway on all sides. Furthermore, no children under the age of 18 will be allowed into the bar area. We would also like members to support Debbie who is now registered with the Liquor Board as the Club Manager.

We would like to make an appeal to all members that still have Club Subs or SAS fees outstanding to please pay these immediately. Those that have paid their SAS fees will be able to collect their membership cards from Heather at the club office and for those who have not paid, please remember that you will not be allowed to take part in any regatta sailed under the ISAF Rules of Racing.

In our attempt to improve the social side of racing, we held a potjie supper after the Ron Weston 20 Miler on Sunday and despite the drizzle that came in as the race ended, we had a very happy and successful supper on the verandah. About 16 people joined tables together and all enjoyed themselves. Please let us have ideas for any future social functions/get-togethers that you as members would like to see at the club.... we need YOUR input.

We are also still looking for members with any particular skills to please come forward and let us know.

HAPPY SAILING AND FAIR WINDS

Yacht run down by ship off SA Coast

Comment : When at sea on a yacht do not rely on the assumption that the OOW has seen you. The days of ships having an Officer of the Watch AND a lookout are gone. Ships crews rely more on electronic aids to navigation than their eyesight. If your yacht is not fitted with AIS and you are too small to be a significant radar target, chances are that the OOW will not know you are there. This is not right but is reality.Like politicians, ship owners require Porches and Johhny Walker Blue to survive. This means that they cannot afford to man ships properly and so reduce the number of crew that they employ. The politicians understand the ship owners plight and so allow legislation to be passed in support of reduced manning requirements. This is the real world. The moral of the story : MIGHT IS RIGHT ! If in doubt get the hell out .....ect ect......

The story : Yacht crew shaken after collision with cargo ship 'Damaged boat back at East London' . Three South African crew members on a yacht delivery trip between East London and Port Elizabeth had a narrow escape after their yacht was smashed from behind by a large cargo ship near Port Alfred.

The incident happened in broad daylight at around 6am yesterday as the crew were underway to deliver the vessel to its owner, Quinton Dosson, in Port Elizabeth.

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) told the Dispatch Online that the ship, which belonged to Sanko Spring Corporation in Japan but was registered in Liberia, smashed into the yacht from behind about 27 nautical miles north of Port Alfred. It was on its way to Britain.

The crew, which included skipper Russell Furlong, Juanita Drewry and teenager Michael Glenister, had to battle for 90 minutes to save themselves after the impact broke their mast, which then fell into the water. They frantically tried to pull the mast from the water, fearing that its wires would wrap around the ship’s propeller and drag them under.

Skipper Furlong , speaking after they limped back into East London harbour, said he jumped from the cabin when he heard a loud bang.
'The ship didn’t stop. I had two concerns – that the mast was lying in the water banging the side of the yacht and could cause a hole that would let water in,' he told the Dispatch.

His other concern was that wiring on the mast could be caught by the ship’s propeller. He got into the water and he, Drewry and Glenister managed to get the mast back on board. They made a U-turn back to East London after assessing the damage.

'There was no doubt we were going to make it back to East London. I’ve had problems in the sea before but this was closest to dying,' said Furlong.

Drewry said she was still frightened when she arrived at shore. 'You don’t get to think about it at the time when such incidents happen, but it is really scary when you think about it when you’ve sat down.'

Glenister’s parents, John and Janine, would not allow reporters to talk to their son, saying he was still shocked.
However, they said they were ecstatic the crew had arrived back home safely. 'I am very relieved that they are safe. I’d rather have been on board than my son but I was at work. It was Michael’s maiden voyage,' his dad said.

Dosson said he tried to track down the cargo ship after he had heard about the incident. He contacted maritime authorities to get assistance and Samsa officials spotted the big ship passing Port Elizabeth.

'They contacted the ship and they (the ship crew) said they missed my boat by 10 metres. It was explained to them that they had hit the boat but (then they) lost contact.'

Samsa investigative officer Peter Kroon confirmed that the ship was registered in Liberia, but said its owners were in Japan. It was common practice for shipping companies to register in countries offering low registration fees, he added. 'We are going to conduct an investigation and contact the flag state (Liberia).'

The likelihood that a cargo ship could deviate at the last moment to avoid a yacht is remote, but the question remains as to why the ship did not make stronger efforts to establish whether a collision had taken place and whether there was any threat to life as a result.

Kroon said the process could take months before it would be finalised.

RON WESTON LONG DISTANCE EVENT - Sunday 28 November

(Report by Tim Duguid)
Sunday provided very pleasant sailing conditions for the annual Ron Weston event. A nice steady NE breeze of about eight knots coming in over the dam wall had nine boats on the start line with five Hunters , 'Dynamite' (of dubious pedigree), a Soling , a L26 and a Dart taking part. Race Officer Roy Shooter chose the usual first leg for the wind direction with the course to No 1(Quantum Sails), then right down to the bottom end of Ashley Bay , around the headland in to Thurlow Bay, around to Orient Bay, then to No 4 (Amanzi Water), on to No 6(Build It) and back to the jetty for the finish.
Race Officer Roy started promptly with a few boats still trying to rig and slip, making it an additional challenge for them to catch the starting members of the fleet. Knip, the L26 , and the Soling had good starts but Knip was OCS in
her eagerness to get going. Anton Ellens, with Vaughan and the gang on board Dynamite, took advantage of conditions and course and led from start to finish with Alan Barr on his Dart close behind.
Anthony Macmillan, making a return to his Hunter sailing, took Picannin out for the day. From starting about a minute late, he came from behind to be the first Hunter around No1.The Hunter fleet was dominated by Essex and Picannin. These two also constantly swapped positions. Unfortunately, Picannin had not rigged their bag at the start of the race, so this saw Essex get away until Picannin got their bag up to catch up very well again. Sailing back up Ashley, Essex decided to swap crew and skipper, putting Paul in the unfamiliar position as crew. Piccanin enjoyed a lift inside Essex and took the lead but was then caught up in the tussle between the Soling and L26, allowing Essex to sneak through again. Essex was constantly pushed by Piccanin, but managed to hold on to her lead to the finish. Nice to see
Rose and Jay on the water again, and Commodore Richard Solomon doing a 'Bertie Reed' and sailing well to beat the girls.
A wonderful duel took place between the Soling, with Keith Gearson at the helm, and the l26 of Georg ,Jenny and Clive with Tommy's sons on board. They constantly swapped positions throughout the entire race.
As Georg said; "It was far from a relaxing fun race, but a great race all the same."
Line honours went to : 1.Dynamite 2. Dart 3.Soling 4. L26
Boat handicaps saw the Hunters lead; 1.Essex 2. Picannin 3. Knip
A great day's sailing. Thanks to Roy Shooter for doing the duties.

Next up is Club Champs #5 incorporating the Monthly Mug and Hunter George Duffin series on Sunday 5 November. This is the last chance of practice before Hunter Provincials, so try and make it onto the water.

Speaking of HUNTER PROVS.......GET THOSE ENTRIES IN.
Entered to date: Essex Girl, Odin's Eye, Flirt, Knip, Picannin, Baby Blue, Hybrid Theory, Bad News.
That only makes eight !!! Come on guys, we normally have at least seventeen entries.
PLEASE COME AND GET THOSE NUMBERS UP.
SAILORS FROM DURBAN:JOIN IN. WE NEED TO KEEP THIS A WELL-ATTENDED HUNTER REGATTA.

Class Champs #3(Sunday 7 November) and Looking Ahead at HMYC

The report from Tim Duguid (thanks Tim) on this past Sunday's action was as short as the RO for the day, Pete (Blitz) Metcalfe aided by one Rob (Flash) Bell, managed to keep the fleet's time on the water !!

But on to the edited version:
RO's Metcalfe and Bell had announced three back-to-back 2-lap windward/leeward races from the Centre mark, using No 1 (Quantum Sails) and a laid bottom can beyond the start/finish line, at the short 10h30 briefing.
The 11h00 start of the first race had seven Hunters, an L20 and an Extra moving off smartly in a steady 10 knot breeze coming over the dam wall.

The first race saw Odin's Eye (with young Marisca Lagrange as crew) get off to a good start from which she took full advantage. Essex Girl took second position with Hybrid Theory, showing good boat speed, hot on her heels.
Nigel Miln and Anton Ellens (Baby Blue), after missing the first race, gave a good account of themselves in the second. They made Hybrid Theory apply the good boat speed shown in the first race to the test, coming in second to a chasing Essex and Odin.
The third race was shortened to a single lap, not really allowing the closely-bunched fleet to fight for positions in a second lap. First three positions were taken by Essex, Hybrid and Knip.

Good sailing by Dr Tim Kerry on Grace saw him take Hunter Silver Fleet honours on the day and had him in close contention for the Monthly Mug. Essex Girl took the Monthly Mug with her consistent sailing.

Hunter Class George Duffin and Hunter Trophy series standings are looking interesting with only one point separating the top two boats in both competitions at this stage of the season.

All things considered, a good day on the water in good sailing conditions.

TO ALL HUNTER CLASS SAILORS: only one Class Champs event before Hunter KZN Provincials. Get your boat out on the water !!!!

HMYC Dinghy Regatta Dec 2010

HMYC Club Champs and Monthly Mug #2

(Report based on info received from Tim Duguid)
Well, things are looking up and interesting!!!
Race #2 of the HMYC Club Champs Series and the second Monthly Mug of the sailing season.
Wind and ten boats on the start line for the first race on Sunday. We had the usual three back-to-back races with Race Officers Mark Patrick and Andy Arbuckle doing the honours. The latest practice of racing to the larger outer cans as windward marks appears to be proving to be most effective, with great long beats and runs.
The first race used the No 1 (Quantum Sails) can. Hunter Odin's Eye, with the young Marisca Lagrange under the experienced tutelage of Tony Cockerill, was quick at the start after which a great tussle developed with Hybrid Theory (sporting the new Pentax sails). The two kept pretty close for the majority of the race but with the wind building, the heavier and more experienced pairing ( Rob Samways/JL Swart) on Hybrid took it at the finish.Rob Tarbie also showed well on his Extra dinghy (Come on dinghy sailors, this old salt needs some competition!!).
The second race saw the wind build quite a bit with some white horses showing on the water. A heavier wind at the start of the season always appears to reveal rig issues and this race was no exception. Odin went to the use of his new blade sail with his light crew aboard. Essex (Paul Changuion/Tim Duguid) broke the leech on their jib so missed the start while sails were changed. At the head of the fleet it was Hybrid and Odin with the former gaining the advantage with heavier crew and larger sail in the stronger wind. A rare show by Nigel Miln on his Hunter Baby Blue (ex Craig Millar), with Anton Ellens as crew, moved up to challenge Hybrid to the line with the finish going in favour of Hybrid by a mere 3 seconds !!!
The final race of the day saw the wind move further to the east and No 2 (Seaport Supply) was to be the windward mark. Essex Girl, with an older jib, suddenly found her legs again and went on to lead the race to the finish. Behind her, the tussle between Hybrid and Baby Blue was rejoined with Hybrid prevailing once again! Always in the mix was Paradigm Shift with Rob Macintosh and Mark Hulzer aboard, sailing well within themselves and hurling abuse whenever the opportunity arose!
Hunter Class Silver Fleet action took the form of participation by Keith Gerson and Roger Eshmade on Witblitz, Rob Bell and crew Derek Wilkes, and Louis Lagrange and Stephen Wagner on Hirondelle. Really good to see the club's elder gentlemen back on the water. Louis made his return to the water with the experienced Stephen Wagner as crew, got the bag flying in the stronger breeze and is at the head of the Silver Fleet standings.
Hunter Class George Duffin Series results for the day went the way of Rob Samways, with the Miln/Ellens pairing looking to develop into an interesting combination. After two GD events it is Odin on top with Essex close behind followed by a closely-bunched group of boats at this early stage of the GD and Hunter Trophy series.
The Monthly Mug for October went the way of the L26 Desiree with rent-a-skipper Alister Bennet from New Zealand handicapped by the presence of HMYC Bosuns, Georg Muller and Clive Waddy, aboard !!!! Well done.
A big thank you to Mark and Andy for doing the honours on Bridge for the day. A job well done.

Next up is event #2 of the Partington Plate long distance series on Sat 16 October. Event #1 was a great start to the Partington Plate Series of the '10/'11 season so be sure to bring out all the cruisers again!! The growing number of larger keelers in the fleet presents a great opportunity to get folk introduced to the joys of sailing, especially as crew.

Upcoming HMYC Calendar Events:

Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 October Rose Bowl Mini Regatta

Masthead - August 2010

SEPTEMBER 2010 NEWS

We were delighted at the response and turnout at the seasons opening cruise where 18 boats and crew sailed past the Commodore and then on to a really fun braai at Dukuduku. We want to arrange more of these social events and suggestions have been made for an evening cruise and raft up, a theme day accompanied by a themed meal, so please let us have your suggestions as to what YOU and YOUR FAMILY would like to do. We want to put the emphasis this year on family and social activities as well as the racing side.

We are also very pleased to welcome back Debbie and family to the club as the official caterer and who will be at the club on every race and event day. Already we are seeing the benefits of having a good caterer in the Galley again so please support her. The other very good news is that we now have our Club Liquor Licence and the bar will also be open on these occasions. Debbie has also been appointed as the Club Manager for the Pub and will in future be running this. We as a committee have decided that it is now time to get rid of some of the old equipment and have already replaced the old stainless steel fridge, are going to replace the sink area, will ultimately look at new cookers and will be bringing back a lounge suite next to the fireplace, where family and guests can relax. The bar fridges have also been serviced and the fans replaced which means that we will have cold beers and cold drinks again…come and experience the new “vibe” at the club.

As part of our expansion into the social and sailing side, Alan Barr has organised a “Cat” regatta for the long weekend and it appears that we have keen interest for this event, so pop out and support them even if only for a picnic or drink.

The first Partington Plate of the season brought out a record number of boats for this event from dinghies to cruisers and was an event enjoyed by all. It was wonderful to see again the members enjoying a drink and chat afterwards on the veranda, while watching the spectacular sunset. Pop out and enjoy the atmosphere with us on the next race day.

Due to popular demand, we are currently looking at widening the car park slipway by some 2 metres to make it easier to launch and particularly for the bigger boats. The intention will be to carry the line down from the edge of the car park on the jetty side as far as we are able with the rapidly retreating water level. We will also paint new alignment lines on either side of the expanded slipway and down the centre line. Thanks to the endeavours of our bosun, Clive, there are now steps on either side of the wooden jetty down to water level.

Please will all members diarise that fact that the Midmar Mile will take place over the weekend of the 11th to 14th February 2011 and as usual we have hired the club and all of its facilities to the Germiston Swim Club and consequently the grounds of the club will be out-of- bounds to members. Whilst we regret that this will happen, this event brings in much needed funds for the club.

We will be reintroducing the Visitors Book and we would ask that all members bringing guests to the club take the time to sign them in and if possible, introduce them to the Commodore and/or some of the committee so that we can make them feel welcome.

We will be sending out the MASTHEAD every month to keep our members right up to date with developments at the club.

We are also looking for members with any particular skills to please come forward and let us know.

HAPPY SAILING AND FAIR WINDS

PARTINGTON PLATE #1 - Saturday 18 September

The Partington Plate Series made a most promising start on Saturday 18 September.

Event #1 of the series saw fourteen boats make the start line after the 13h30 briefing by RO Roy Shooter, ably assisted by Elspeth Gray. Most encouraging was the number of larger keelers turning out on the day. More encouraging was the presence of some new faces at the Club and on the boats, and the re-emergence of a number of 'absentee' members.Word around the club is that a few more of the bigger boats should be joining the fray in the near future.

The warm westerly had the RO set a course from a Jetty start to No 6 (Buildit),No 4 (Amanzi Water),No 1 (Quantum Sails), back to Amanzi, up to Quantum for a second time, and then to the Jetty for the finish.

First to No 1 was Tarbie flying along on his little Extra to lead the fleet all the way home. Then came a bunch of craft led by the Hunters Picannin and Flirt, followed by a gaggle of some lovely old keelers shaking out their long-stored sails and adding some real bulk to the fleet.
Hunter Picannin managed to hoist a perfect 'wine glass' spinnaker rounding No 1 (having had the bag stored for over six months) allowing Flirt and a Dart to overtake.Close on their heels was Hunter Paradigm Shift (Robin Mc with rent-a-student crew, Rachel, on board). Also in the mix was the L26, Desiree, with her asymetrical bag.
As the fleet moved around No 4 for the second time, the wind switched to a gusting easterly, making the leg back up to No1 a "soldier's course". The newly-acquired Stadt 22 of 'Odin' Cockerill,Lentil (paid for?), was out on the water after lying at her mooring for some years and used the conditions to enjoy a race-within-a-race with HMYC Commodore, Richard Solomon, at the helm of the Hunter, Aquarius, with the latter just sneaking ahead at the finish
line.
Also out on the water were other bigger keelers enjoying the outing: the Stadt 26, Cheers, the L20 of Pete Goble, the Theta 26 of Big D Wagner and a Microsail. Hunters Ukuzingela and Knip were also out to enjoy the day.

The wind conditions on the run to the finish at the Jetty proved quite interesting with some participants reporting unstoppable rolling, Chinese gybes and near broaches !

A great day's sailing followed by refreshments on the verandah, with the gathering being entertained with stories of daring feats out on the water.

A great start to the Partington Plate Series of the '10/'11 season. Let's work at getting more of the keelers at mooring out and sailing. The growing number of larger keelers in the fleet presents a great opportunity to get folk introduced to the joys of sailing, especially as crew.

AT HMYC THIS WEEKEND

Saturday 18 September Partington Plate #1 . Briefing 13h30.
First event of the Partington PLate series.
These races/cruises are of medium/longer distance and open to ALL classes. Start is usually from the Jetty and then following a course around the outer cans on Midmar, dependant on the wind direction and weather conditions at the time of the start.
A perfect opportunity to get out on to the water in good company. For those of less competitive persuasion, the chance to hone sailing skills or simply get together with family and friends for a sail around the dam.
For the dinghies this can be a good test of stamina and skill, the Hunter Class usually makes up a good number of the fleet, with a few of the larger keelers shaking out their sails.
Come on the larger keeler fraternity.Get folk out on the water. Where are the Holiday 24's, the L26's, the Van De Stadts, the Mistrals, the Solings, the Microsails, the Pirates, etc, etc.
A word of warning..........Be on the lookout for "Lentil" on the start line with Odin at the helm !!!

First Club Champs and Monthly Mug - HMYC

There was plenty of family activity around the clubhouse on a great early spring day at Midmar. The HMYC Galley was open to provide the necessary to all, in the form of eats and drinks. Good to see all the smiling faces around the place again.
Great to be back on the water in good company.
The first official racing of the new season at HMYC!! Club Champs #1 of Series of 8 events(first Sunday of each month), incorporating the Monthly Mug and Class Champs events.
Conditions? Clear skies.Light to moderate NE over the dam wall.
Race Officer Rob T, very ably assisted by Brenda T, laid the leeward can close to start/finish line and then had us sail all the way up to the large outer cans at either No1 (QUANTUM SAILS) or No2 (SEAPORT SUPPLY), depending on the wind shift at start time.
First race to No 1 and the thoroughbreds champing at the bit! Start saw 'Hawkeye' Tarboton noticing someone over the line with Odin going back, only to find that they were not the guilty party ! Essex Girl realised that they had transgressed and doubled back. Both boats fought their way back through the small fleet to take up 1st and 2nd after the course was shortened as a result of the wind dropping off, with Flirt a good 3rd. The L26, sporting a modified assymetrical spinny (perhaps our solution to the Lipton cup boat!!!) sailed well to take the race on handicap!!
Second race. The wind clocked to the east and No2 was used. Here boats favouring the left of the course got lifted beautifully up to the can .Those that went right were left behind. Knip, skippered by young James Patrick, did incredibly well to put one over Essex to come in behind Odin and get a 1st on handicap.
Third race. And wind back to the dam wall.Essex had a great start and went into a commanding lead. Odin recovered well after having to go back after an early start to take the fleet and, eventually, Essex on the second beat to take line and handicap honours for the race.
In the Hunter Class, giving a good account of himself and the only class Silver Fleet competitor, was Commodore Richard Solomon doing his single-handed trick.
Thanks to Rob and 'Hopalong' T for enabling others to enjoy their sailing.
Trust that more vessels will make their appearance on the water for sailing pleasure, or on the start line for some friendly rivalry, as the season progresses. Do your bit to encourage folk onto the water.
Please keep an eye on the website and on the HMYC calendar.
Next up:
Sunday 12 September Sailing and Bridge Training. Briefing 10h30
Saturday 18 September Partington Plate #1 . Briefing 13h30.
Come on the large keeler fraternity.Be on the lookout for Lentil !!!

LET'S GET ON TO THE WATER IN NUMBERS !!!!!

Sunday 5 September 2010

Calendar indicates first event of Club Champs Series, incorporating Monthly Mug event, for all classes.
Briefing at 10h30. Normally 3 races on the day.
RO: Rob and Brenda T

For the Hunter Class, an added incentive is the friendly Class Chapmps rivalry in pursuit of the George Duffin (scratch) and Hunter Class (handicap) Trophies.
As mentioned last week, some of our little boats are looking great due to some TLC in the 'off season'. Let's see what happens out on the water.....

NATIONALS are on the Vaal next year. Let's get the HMYC RAIDERS team up and running from the start of the season. Competition for the Reg Beavitt Trophy (National Club Champions) should be 'stiff' at an 'away' venue like the Vaal.

Hunter Class News

HMYC Hunter Class has been "on hold" during the local off-season.
Was up at the Club a short while ago and caught sight of the results of some of our class members' efforts during the break in activities.
If some of the 'little boats' sail as good as they look, then we're in for some great sailing during the new season !!!!

HMYC Opening Cruise coming up this weekend.
11h00 SUNDAY 29 AUGUST 2010.
Recent Masthead newsletter publications appear to indicate a new energy and direction for HMYC.
Really exciting to see.

Congrats to the new HMYC Committee under the leadership of Commodore Richard Solomon. They're already putting in the effort.....it's up to the members to get involved.

Paul Changuion and Co have created a new-look website with Facebook and Blog applications. Visit the website at www.hmyc.org.za and check it out.

All the info and news required is available on the website. Stay informed!!!!!!

HUNTER FOR SALE:ANYONE INTERESTED ?????????

From: Gert Cronje [mailto:gertcr@mweb.co.za]
Sent: 20 August 2010 09:33

She is on the dry and on a road trailer available immediately.
Do you know of someone who might be interested??
The only reason I am selling it is there is no other competition in our club and to compete I had to upgrade.
I have upgraded to a Theta and need to sell my Hunter urgently. My price is negotiable. I would prefer to sell it to someone who is passionate about Hunters and is really keen to sail.
I have had numerous replies from Gumtree but they are not Hunter sailors.
If you know of someone it would be appreciated if they could contact me on 072 337 6829 Regards Gert Cronje

2010/2011 SAILING SEASON OPENING CRUISE

This is the first of what we hope will form part of the new
social scene at the club.

We are very pleased to advise that we have appointed Debbie
as the full time caterer at the club and we warmly welcome her back.

The canteen will therefore be open on all race days and as soon as the liquor license is finalised (within the next three weeks we hope) the pub will also be open and Debbie will have control of this as well.

We ask that all club members take advantage of this positive action and that they support both the Club, Pub and of course, Debbie.

We want the vibe to be a friendly social one, very family orientated and this can only happen if we take advantage of the new facility.

We hope to see as many of you as possible at the opening cruise and on subsequent weekends.

BE THERE – MAKE A DIFFERENCE !!
