HMYC MASTHEAD # 9: MAY 2012
SAILING PROGRAMME
(From Rob Bell 033 3442182, cell 0739618006)
Sundays 6th, 13th, 20th,
27th May and 3rd June: The Von Klemperer series
consisting of five races (one race per day) will be held on these Sundays. It is a medium distance race around fixed
bouys, and the racing is open to all classes. A pre-race briefing will take
place on the verandah at 13h15, with a jetty start at 14h00. After the final race on the 3rd
June, snacks will be served in the pub. The galley will be open for the Von Klemperer series of races.
On Sundays 10th and 17th June
the Brass Monkey series of races will be held.
This consists of two races, only, one race on each day. This is also a medium distance race around
fixed bouys, and is open to all classes.
A pre-race briefing will take place on the verandah at 13h15, with a
jetty start at 14h00. The
galley won’t be open for the Brass
Monkey series of races, so please bring your own food and drinks.
Attendance at the pre-race briefings is not compulsory,
but it is advisable to attend them as even though the course directions should
be posted on the Board before the race by the Race Officer, last minute changes
can be made.
For those who enjoyed the best yachting facility in
the country, thanks for your participation in this year’s sailing events, and
to those Race Officers who gave of their time to provide you with well managed
sailing events, thanks, your effort is much appreciated. Without you the sailing calendar would not
exist. Finally, please support the
incoming Committee, and let HMYC see you on the water in the coming season.
YOUTH SAILING
The RS
Tera class in South Africa is a relatively new youth class and is proving to be
a great way for young kids (8 years to 16 years) to begin sailing and then move
into racing relatively easily and quickly. The boat is a single handed boat
with two sail options, the Sport and Pro. Interestingly the Pro sail is 2.8 sqm
which is 1 sqm larger than the Laser 4.7! This makes the boat really exciting for
the older kids.
There
have been two Nationals in South Africa since the class was launched. Both the
Nationals in 2011 and 2012 were sailed at Pine Lake Marina in Sedgefield which
has been transformed into a premier dingy location. Last year the Nationals
were hosted by GLYC and this year by KYC. Both events had turnouts of 35 plus
boats which shows a healthy class.
In KZN
there are 6 active sailors with 5 of the kids from PYC and Nic Forshaw from
HMYC. Sail Africa also uses the Tera as training boats. The KZN kids have made
a great attempt to attend the provincials sailed around the country. Nic came 3rd at the KZN
provincials held in September last year at HMYC, 12th at the Eastern
Cape Provincials held at Mosselbaai and First at the North Vaal Provincials at
LDYC this April. He also came 12th at the Nationals at Pine lake
Marina and finished 7th for the series.
This has
given him the opportunity to go over to Lake Iseo in Lombardy Italy to sail in
the World Championships in August 2012. This will be held from 6th
to 10th August at the magnificent Associazione Nautica Sebina (ANS)
Yacht Club. Any on and off the water training gladly accepted from willing HMYC
sailors!!
Nic is
currently in grade 8 at Michaelhouse and has been the lone sailing voice at the
school. His perseverance has paid off with a new master, Mathew Higginson,
taking the reins as sailing representative. At this stage the sport will be
recognised as a club activity but Nic is determined to make it a full school
sport!! Michaelhouse have also been very supportive of his endeavours giving
the necessary time off school to sail regattas and the opportunity to come to
HMYC whenever possible to get time on the water. Nic has also sailed on Mirrors
participating in 2 Nationals and 2 Youth Nationals and loves the opportunity of
sailing on a Soling whenever he can.
We look
forward to this becoming a catalyst to getting Youth Sailing off to a positive
start for the next sailing season.
OTHER CLUB INFORMATION:
Club Trophies
Again, I’d like to remind you that if you have any of
the Club’s trophies at home, please can you return them to the Club as soon as
possible, as the AGM and prize-giving is coming up soon, and they will need to
be engraved for the new winners? The AGM
and prize-giving will once again be a combined event, to be held on Sunday 24th
June, up at the Club. The exact time of
this will be announced closer to the date, but it will be at lunchtime.
Club Committee
And, if you are prepared to help with the running of
your Club and can stand on the Club Committee next season, in any portfolio,
please can you give your name to one of the Committee members and your help
will be gratefully accepted. To date there have been no nominations for the
important positions of Vice Commodore Sailing, or Secretary
Boat and
Trailer Parking
The invoices for
subs for the 2012/2013 year will be sent out shortly – we’re going to try to
e-Mail as many as possible, so please can you make sure that Heather has your
correct e-Mail address?
Remember, if you
wish to have Hes ensure that your boats and trailers have the 2012/3 stickers
attached, then please contact him and he will be more than happy to oblige.
Any boat/trailer
which can’t be identified as belonging to an HMYC member, will be removed from
the parking area and padlocked until such times as the owner appears and
verifies that the appropriate fees have been paid.
The Gantry is being
moved to alongside the Boat House and a concrete base will be laid, so that
with adjacent electricity and water a much improved working area will be
available to members. Once this is in place painting and major renovation work
will no longer be permitted in the tarred parking area. The tarred area must be
protected as the Club will not be able to absorb the cost of having to
resurface this area.
Those members who
visit the Club regularly will notice the Committee is upgrading areas in and
around the Club House to improve facilities for our members and this process
will be on-going.

Trailer Maintenance
There are many
trailers in the park which have flat tyres and tow hitches which need
lubrication/maintenance. As a service to members the Committee will offer to
look after these items for any member who wants to ensure that when they arrive
their trailer is ready to use. If you wish to avail yourself of this facility
please let Hes know (preferably by email) and he will provide details and
organise it. The charge will be R100/annum added to your 2012/13 membership
fees.
Boat Shed:
The padlock on the boat shed at the far end of the car
park had to be replaced recently, so if you have boats in there, you will need
to get a new key from Hes Hamilton. His
contact details are above; otherwise if you want to get access to the boat shed
on a sailing day, and don’t have a key, ask Thammi – the groundsman - as he has
a key. However, Thammi locks the boat
shed before he leaves the Club at 16h00 on a weekend so please ensure that you
have all your things out of the boat shed/ put all your things back by 15h30.
