MASTHEAD # 3 2013/2014

One down, four to go!!  That’s the situation with the regattas which HMYC is hosting this season.  This past weekend we held the SASKZN Youth Provincials for Optimists, Dabchicks, Laser 4.7 and Laser Radial, and also the RS Teras.  The weather didn’t play ball – cold on Friday, cold and wet on Saturday, then marginally warmer on Sunday because at least the sun came out …  Rob Bell and his team did an excellent job of braving the weather to give the competitors a regatta, and my thanks go to him.

Unfortunately there was only a total of 32 entries split between the four classes, but I think that all the competitors enjoyed themselves, even if they were cold!!  There were some visiting sailors from both Gauteng and the Cape – maybe they were ‘warming up’ for the Youth Nationals which is the next regatta which will be held at HMYC?  Your Club held up well to the hive of activity, and there were some favourable comments from competitors’ parents regarding the recent sprucing up of the Club.

The next major regatta to be held at HMYC will be the MSC SAS Youth Nationals, which will be held in the week before Christmas.  Some prior warning for this one – we will have to move some of the keelboats which are parked in the car park to make way for the expected entry of over two hundred boats – so if you have a keelboat in the two lanes closest to the front of the car park, you will be contacted closer to the time and asked to move your boat ‘up’ a lane in order to close off the middle road in the car park and make more boat parking space at the front of the car park.  I will mention this in the next Masthead, and you will also be contacted by e-Mail about it.  The regatta dates are the 14th to the 20th December, and it would be inadvisable to visit the Club during that period as the Club will be full of juniors and their boats and you won’t be able to park your car in the Club car park….

The main cost which your Club will incur for the Youth Nationals regatta is petrol!!  We will have three courses on the dam, with at least four power boats one each course, and the cost of using one power boat per day will be about R500.  So if you know of a company, or an individual, who would be willing to sponsor one boat for either one day of the regatta, or else for the whole 5 days – R2500 - please let Connie know.  The company will get recognition of their sponsorship in the regatta booklet, and also mention in various other publications.  Depending on the amount of sponsorship provided, they will also be able to put up advertising in and around the Club for the regatta.

There are still some HMYC members who haven’t paid their 2013/2014 subs.  If you haven’t received a subs invoice, please contact Connie – hmyc@mweb.co.za – and she will be happy to e-Mail you a duplicate one.  The subs invoice includes the SAS levy, so if you haven’t paid your HMYC subs you won’t be able to participate in Provincial or National championships until these have been paid.

Just a quick reminder – Thami, the HMYC groundsman, reports to Bob Gray, so if you want Thami to help you with your boat or mooring, you must please clear it with Bob – don’t approach Thami directly.
