Hello everyone
The final Monthly Mug #8 takes place this weekend at the club, thereafter the Autumn Handicap on 10 Apr, and Closing Cruise on 17 April. This brings our sailing season to close for another year. There has been a request for the Closing Cruise to consist of a long distance race with a braai to be held on the other side of the dam, similar to what was held for our opening cruise. Please could you let me know if this would be favourably received so that we can gauge numbers.
Also, a reminder once again to set Saturday 4 June aside for the club’s AGM and Prize Giving. A notice will be sent out soon with details of vacancies on the various committees.
Island Sailing Club are hosting the Halcat Provincials on 16/17 April. A message from Jennifer –
Hi Guys REMINDER :
Anyone with boats that they would be willing to lend out please let us know so that we can accommodate some other sailors that would like to sail.
Island will be open from Friday Nite. Breakfast rolls on Saturday & Sunday Morning & Island Famous Burger Lunch. Saturday Nite Braai packs & Salads and Music Lets make a Party of it.
And of course, as we all know, when Island plan a party, that is what they get! If anyone would like me to forward the NOR/SI on to them, please let me know.

HMYC UPDATE - Tuesday 29 March 2011
A reminder to all HMYC folk re the ‘goings on’ scheduled for Sunday. Let’s have a bumper showing for the last event of the Class Champs series and Monthly Mug events for the ‘10/’11HMYC sailing season.
A thought for the day:
“It is better to burn out than fade away.” – Neil Young (from the Silverback genre, Tim and Paul !!!)
* Sunday 3 April - Class Champs and Monthly Mug #8
Final event of the series - Briefing 10h30
Talk is that this will go "down to the wire". Don't miss the final event of the series!!!
* Sunday 10 April - Autumn Handicap
* Sunday 17 April - 2010/2011 Closing Cruise
‘SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC’ HUNTER CLASS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Final results now posted on the Hunter Class website.
Congratulations to Luke Wagner and crew Byron Watt (flying the PYC pennant) for taking the Champs Trophy. A great result and mastering trying conditions. We are happy to claim a very proud Wagner family as an HMYC connection!
Despite the fact that individual performances did not place HMYC club entries in the medals at the event, the team of HMYC Hunter ‘Raiders’ were successful in defending their club champs title. The ‘Raiders’ managed a four point win over good friends and rivals, Witbank Yacht and Aquatic Club, to claim the Reg Beavitt Memorial Trophy.
Thank you to the HMYC Hunter Class members who towed boats to the Vaal as members of the HMYC ‘Raiders’ team, namely Richard and Mary Solomon, Nigel Miln and Anton Ellens, Pete Metcalfe and Kevin Kirkman, Craig ‘Crash’ Millar and Francisco, Paul Changioun and Tim Duguid, Tony Cockerill and Hank Pike, Robin Macintosh and Mark Hultzer.

“SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC” HUNTER CLASS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
DAC – VAAL DAM
Saturday 19 March to Monday 21 March 20011
Consistency on the water was once again the name of the game as ‘Bad News’ (Luke Wagner/ Byron Watt) travelled fast in challenging wind conditions to take the Hunter Class’ National title.
Thirty-five of these ever-popular nineteen foot keelers participated in the three-day championship regatta, sailed out of DAC on the Vaal Dam. Race Officer, Trevor Hulleman, and his able assistants did very well in typically changeable Highveld dam wind conditions to get through the quota of races to the satisfaction of the participants.
The results of the only two races completed on the Saturday reflected the widely-ranging performances of the competing boats in the often-fluky conditions. By the end of the second day, only four or five boats had made the most of their opportunities and were in realistic contention for top honours, with clear evidence of close tussles throughout the remainder of the fleet. A single race on Monday, sailed in light and variable conditions, determined the final positions for the regatta.
Luke was able to put his rapidly-growing sailing experience to the test against many of the more mature campaigners in the Hunter Class and was certainly not found wanting. Multiple past champions, John Bruckman and Dave Martinson, were complimentary in their praise of Luke as they settled for second place after their competitive showing in the early races of the regatta. Luke represents the growing number of young sailors coming to the fore in keeler fleet competitions across the country. A most positive sign indeed.
Henley Midmar Yacht Club won the ‘Reg Beavitt Memorial Trophy’ after their five top finishing ‘HMYC Raiders’ entrants pipped Witbank Yacht and Aquatic Club’s team by the narrowest of margins in the competition for the club trophy. It was interesting to note the encouraging number of entrants from clubs towing boats to the Vaal.
Results:
Scratch – 1. ‘Bad News’ (Luke Wagner/Byron Watt)
2. ‘Copadaph’ (John Bruckman/Dave Martinson)
3. ‘Vaal Valk’ (Herbie Karolius/Keith Vennell)
Handicap – 1. ‘Haysons’ (Colin Hay/Steve Mathews)
2. ‘Kingship’ (James King/Oliver Reprich)
3. ‘Wings’ (Sleigh Haynes/John Haynes)
Youth – 1. ‘Spottymoto’ (David Santiero/Sean van Rensburg)
Ladies – 1. ‘Assegaai’ – (Jessica Lenz/Birgit Johnstone)
Reg Beavitt (Club Competition ) Memorial Trophy – Henley Midmar Yacht Club

NOTICES
CLUB SUBSCRIPTIONS
Please note that the club subs are due on the 1st May of each year and while we are not trying to look for resignations, it must be remembered that any such resignation must be received within 21 days of the first account for the subs. Failing this the full years subs will be due and payable. Furthermore we are trying to investigate the possibility of setting up a debit order system which will make annual payments that much easier.
INFORMATION
The club Secretary will be drawing up a questionnaire to obtain updated particulars of members and it would be greatly appreciated if you would kindly complete these and return them to Heather as soon as possible.
LIQUOR LICENCE
The Club now has a liquor licence, and the relevant rules must be strictly adhered to. A copy of the pub rules is available in the Pub and we would again urge members to strictly adhere to these regulations otherwise our licence will be at jeopardy.
MIDMAR CARD
We have received an email from Ms Neli Khoza who is 2 I.C. at Midmar Resort. If you are currently in possession of a Midmar Entry Card which still has a few months to go before expiry, you are urged to please notify Neli as a matter of urgency so that a replacement card can be issued to you. Unfortunately, failure to do so will result in the cancellation of the current card and entry will be denied at the main gate. The resort are in the process of changing their gate entry system so we urge all members to comply with this request as soon as is possible. They have asked for the information before the end of the week so if you are not able to get to Midmar, we suggest that a phone call to Neli at 033 330 2067 or an email to khozan@kznwildlife.com will help.
NEW MEMBERS
We would like to welcome Ms J McMillan who has had her membership status altered.
MIDMAR MILE
Please note that the Club has had a letter from the Swim School who rented the premises, saying how delighted they were with the club, its staff and caterer. We have negotiated a 5 year lease with them which will bring in good revenue to the club and which is guaranteed for the future.
QUANTUM HMYC 9-HOUR ENDURANCE RACE
What a great day both from a weather point of view and from the increased participation to 54 boats at the start line and most at the finish line as well. Our thanks go to our main sponsor, Quantum Sails and also to Seaport supplies for the regatta and to Richard Willington for the beers which kept the club afloat over the weekend. Of course we owe a huge thank you to Dave Wagner and his committee and helpers on the day for the massive amount of organising that lead to a happy event.
MPUMALANGA HUNTER CHAMPIONSHIPS
We had a number of our Hunter sailors who took part, and early and brief news is that the HMYC flag was flying high with Tony/Hank on Odins Eye taking the honours. Well done guys. We are waiting for the full results but understand that HMYC did very well overall.
HUNTER NATIONALS AT DAC
We have a number of members and crew heading off to the above champs over the weekend of the 19th-21st March and we wish them all fair winds and happy sailing. Let us hope that we can repeat previous honours by bringing the trophy home again.
EASTER REGATTA
Alan Barr is very involved with this regatta so if anyone needs any further information on this event to be sailed off Durban, please contact Alan.
2010/2011 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Please diarise the date of Saturday 4th June 2011 which has been set for the Annual General Meeting and make every effort to attend.
HAPPY SAILING AND FAIR WINDS

Quick Newsflash- Wednesday 9 March
Just for your info……
A couple of HMYC Hunter ‘Raiders’ undertook a pre-Nationals ‘recce’ to WYAC over the past weekend to participate in the Mpumalanga Hunter Provs in Witbank.
Suffice to say that the WYAC hospitality, once again, was of the ‘top drawer’ and that the ‘Silverbacks’ came away with the Gold ( Odin putting on a sublime display at the helm in changeable wind conditions) while Mrs Changuion’s ‘prats’ came away sans sail ( a story in itself!).
Second in the Provs was the WYAC Bruckman/Martinson combination with another WYAC combo of Mike Hayton and Malcolm Orin taking Bronze.
Hunter Nationals are just over a week away !!!!
Please confirm whether or not you will be in the band of HMYC ‘Raiders’, as entrants or camp followers, travelling to DAC on the Vaal.
Odin would like to take care of the order of HMYC RAIDERS 2011 shirts asap.
